My only hope is that there are unlockable characters like Rosalina, Pauline, Wario and Waluigi Foreman Spike. Yoshi with the three wackest colours being relegated to a cheese character is lame. The inclusion of Daisy, Toadette and Nabbit is cool. All of it looks really cool but there's a few things that bother me.įirst and foremost, the character selection imo straight up sucks so far. For now my excitement level is at an 8 out of 10. It's always difficult to judge these presentations because Nintendo is great at making it look like they revealed too much and too little at the same time. I had an idea for a game back in high school where you telekinetically lifted chunks of terrain to make short-lived platforms for puzzle solving and I've just always liked the general concept of a platformer where you can make platforms. Powerup-wise, I really like the bubbles making temporary platforms. The designs are great and the gimmicks look fun. Maybe I'm misremembering, but it feels rare for a 2D Mario game to introduce a new group of enemies like this. One of my favorite parts was the introduction of new enemies. I'd rather have it than not have it though. So while there's fun in collecting every badge I can see most people identifying the small handful of good badges while the rest just sort of become junk to collect for the sake of collecting. I guess the argument would be it's necessary for balancing like those who would argue against customization in this type of game, but I foresee the usual problem with equip systems where everything has the same 'cost' (in this case, your lone equip slot that every badge is competing for) but not every equipable has the same value. I would've preferred mixing and matching. Looks like you can only equip one badge at a time though. I've seen some very heated arguments in the past on why action-focused platformers shouldn't have customization/equippable type stuff for tighter and more meaningful level design so I'm curious what the general consensus on badges will be but it's definitely my cup of tea. The RPG fan in me loves the idea of badges. It's odd they lied about the elephant powerup being Mario only. My only real disappointment is all the characters just being alt skins without any unique gameplay characteristics. Playing games in our collection is like playing video games from the future! The somewhat repetitive, blunt dialogue offers little emotion or passion in what is supposed to be an exciting affair fuelled by love, and results in a relatively slow-paced narrative. In a scenario where husband and wife seem to have little loyalty to their marriage and have cheated multiple times in the past, what makes Nick’s new relationship with Frances important? The characters themselves appear to struggle to express ‘why’ at times, until perhaps Melissa’s confrontation of Frances in episode 10. However, whilst offering insight into what it is to be a twenty-something navigating life on the pathway to adulthood, Conversations With Friends ultimately gives little reason for audiences to invest in the love lives of its characters. The youthful, soft-indie feel sets the tone of innocence and discovery in combination with the more serious themes and topics that the show deals with, such as extramarital affairs and mental illness. On top of this, the 12-part series' soundtrack is one to be contested with, featuring songs from the likes of girl in red, Mitski, and even an original song by Grammy nominated Phoebe Bridgers. The raw depiction of the symptoms and challenges faced by those who suffer with the condition in an unfiltered and authentic way is important and helps to increase representation and awareness of reproductive health issues that are often glossed-over or completely ignored by mainstream media. In particular, the series’ depiction of Frances’ endometriosis diagnosis is extremely powerful. Many can identify with the characters struggles with feeling overshadowed or left behind in the wake of her outspoken best friend Bobbi, and Frances’ attempts to find her role in the world away from her childhood is something recognisable to most young people as they begin to discover their identity. Following on from TikTok’s obsession with the show and the phenomenon that was Connell’s chain (even earning its own Instagram account), Conversations With Friends follows with the same romanticism of Ireland and complicated romances that we now know and love.Įnglish student Frances, despite the occasional pretentious comment, offers a real and authentic representation of the confused, ambitious, introverted girl in their early twenties. The TV adaptation has been highly anticipated following the lockdown favourite series Normal People (2020), based on another of Rooney’s best-selling novels. A connection soon starts to develop between Frances and Nick, leading to an affair that causes tensions between the group to rise exponentially. The new BBC drama follows best friends and past lovers Frances (Oliver) and Bobbi (Lane) as they meet wealthy husband and wife Nick (Alwyn) and Melissa (Kirke). ![]() ![]() Is it possible to love two people at once? By Victoria Pope, First Year, English Literature ![]() ![]() Hokusai began painting when he was six years old, and when he was twelve his father sent him to work in a bookstore. As Hokusai was never recognised as an heir, it is likely his mother was a concubine. He was the son of a shogun mirrormaker, and at the age of 14, he was named Tokitarō. Katsushika Hokusai was born in Katsushika, Japan, in 1760 in a district east of Edo. Main article: Katsushika Hokusai Hokusai, self-portrait of 1839 As printing was done by hand, printers were able to achieve effects impractical with machines, such as the blending or gradation of colours on the printing block. Artists rarely carved their own woodblocks production was divided between the artist, who designed the prints the carver, who cut the woodblocks the printer, who inked and pressed the woodblocks onto hand-made paper and the publisher who financed, promoted, and distributed the works. Some ukiyo-e artists specialized in creating paintings, but most works were prints. In the 1760s, the success of Suzuki Harunobu's "brocade prints" led to full-colour production becoming standard, with ten or more blocks used to create each print. By the 1740s, artists such as Okumura Masanobu used multiple woodblocks to print areas of colour. Colour prints were introduced gradually, and at first were only used for special commissions. The earliest ukiyo-e works, Hishikawa Moronobu's paintings and monochromatic prints of women, emerged in the 1670s. Printed or painted ukiyo-e works were popular with the chōnin class, who had become wealthy enough to afford to decorate their homes with them. The term ukiyo-e ( 浮世絵) translates as "picture of the floating world".Īfter Edo (now Tokyo) became the seat of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate in 1603, the chōnin class of merchants, craftsmen, and workers benefited most from the city's rapid economic growth, and began to indulge in and patronise the entertainment of kabuki theatre, geisha, and courtesans of the pleasure districts the term ukiyo ("floating world") came to describe this hedonistic lifestyle. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of subjects including female beauties kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers scenes from history and folk tales travel scenes and landscapes Japanese flora and fauna and erotica. The Great Wave off Kanagawa has been described as "possibly the most reproduced image in the history of all art", as well as being a contender for the "most famous artwork in Japanese history". Several museums throughout the world hold copies of The Great Wave, many of which came from 19th-century private collections of Japanese prints. The composition of The Great Wave is a synthesis of traditional Japanese prints and use of graphical perspective developed in Europe, and earned him immediate success in Japan and later in Europe, where Hokusai's art inspired works by the Impressionists. The print is Hokusai's best-known work and the first in his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, in which the use of Prussian blue revolutionized Japanese prints. The print depicts three boats moving through a storm-tossed sea, with a large wave forming a spiral in the centre and Mount Fuji visible in the background. That’s not to say getting involved with either of these is a total let-down - they’re still perfectly fine - they just feel a little flat and uninvolved in terms of presentation and there are few reasons to stick with them compared to Diamond Dynasty and the new Storylines offering. Both its Franchise and Road to the Show modes do little to make themselves stand out over previous entries, continuing to take a firm back seat to the centrepiece Diamond Dynasty. ![]() How the process is initiated through the GUI and program does not suggest the process is performed differently. Or a Camry is different type of car than an Accord, Firefox is a different type program than Chrome, or Avast vs BitDefender.Īnd sorry, but deleting a temporary file or cookie from a hard drive, or editing an orphaned entry in the Registry is done the same way, with the same result. That would be like saying an iPhone is a different type of electronic device than an android phone. Massive differences in a user interface does not, in any way, mean one program is a " different type of program" from the other. Ignoring others and sticking ones head in the sand does not make the issues go away. It is a decent program.ĭebating facts does not suggest a "fight", nor should it elicit feelings of a personal affront and insults. But let's not make up falsehoods about CCleaner in some twisted attempt to justify PrivaZer instead of CCleaner. PrivaZer doesn't but sure wants us to upgrade to the "Donor" version when using and setting up the program. It is not a different type of program than CC so not sure what you are talking about there.ĬCleaner only nags once during initial installation. In fact, they work best when the OS is run in Safe Mode. In fact, both are much more efficient at cleaning when all other programs are closed. And frankly, so what if they are resource hogs? These are not programs you typically run while performing other tasks. THAT SAID, both are thrifty when it comes to resource utilization, therefore neither are resource hogs (or bloated). And according to task manager, PrivaZer uses a lot more RAM and CPU resources than CC. And BTW, the restore feature works - I tested it.ĬCleaner takes up a whole 77.2 MB on my disk. Oh, and for sure, considering the fact Windows own Registry Editor (regedit) makes changes in real-time, and doesn't even have a backup feature, or offer to backup (or export) BEFORE making changes, I would much rather users use CCleaner, which does offer to backup the registry before making changes. Regardless, whenever messing with the Registry, either by a 3rd party utility, or via Registry Editor, one should always run a backup first. There is no reason to believe they wouldn't remove the Registry cleaner too if it caused problems. So Speccy removed that function and no longer reports that. But with many motherboards, the reported values were way off, reporting 6.2V for the 12V value as an illustrating example. For example, Speccy, their HW information applet, used to report PSU voltages as found on the motherboard. After upgrading from W7 to W10, or W10 to W11, once sure everything works, I will run the cleaner.Īnd for the record, Piriform also has a history of removing features that don't work correctly. ![]() So, for example, if I replace a NVIDIA graphics card with an AMD (or the other way around), I will run the cleaner after the installation to clean out all the crud left behind by the removed card. One caveat/qualification - I never use the registry cleaner to "fix" a broken computer - only to maintain it. And I never, not once had it brick a computer. While anecdotal, I personally have used CCleaner's Registry cleaner on 100s of different computers, likely more than a 1000s times. But still, many simply lump all Registry cleaners in one evil heap and that does CCleaners an injustice. In fact, if anything, some would suggest it is not aggressive enough. Yes, decades ago, some registry cleaner were reckless and way too aggressive. It is unreasonable to assume such a popular and useful tool that's been around that long would still be on the market (or, as an included feature) if that harmful as some suggest. CCleaner has been around for close to 20 years. Having the ability to keep specific cookies during cleanup is invaluable to me.Īnd for the record, the claim that CCleaner's Registry cleaner can be harmful is misleading and totally exaggerated too. If you believe CCleaner is unsafe, then you should use no 3rd party cleaning tool and just stick with Windows own Disk Cleanup. Rather, it was caused by the new owners of Piriform (Avast) sticking their noses in the mix without doing their homework first. And it should be pointed out the issue that caused the most attention wasn't even caused by the developers of CCleaner (Piriform). And the problems were quickly addressed long ago. First and foremost, the few issues were minor, actually affected only a tiny number of the 10s of millions of users. |
